GNSS Spoofing Changes the Troubleshooting Mindset Onboard

Recent GNSS and AIS interference reporting shows why yacht troubleshooting needs to compare sensors, logs, and operational context before blaming one device.

Navigation and communications troubleshooting is becoming less binary. A fault may not be a failed antenna, bad cable, or misconfigured device. It may be the result of GNSS spoofing, jamming, AIS anomalies, poor sensor fusion, or external interference that affects multiple systems at once.

Windward's 2025 maritime disruption reporting described GPS spoofing and jamming as part of a wider stress test for maritime operations. Recent JMIC advisory material has also reported continuing GNSS/GPS interference, spoofing, jamming, and AIS anomalies around high-risk sea areas. Academic research in 2025 and 2026 is now looking at mariner experiences and AIS-based methods for detecting potential spoofing events.

For yachts, the practical habit is cross-checking. If the plotter position looks wrong, compare radar overlay, visual bearings, depth, inertial data, secondary GNSS, AIS targets, ECDIS alarms, Starlink geolocation behavior, and vessel logs before declaring a single component failed.

A useful troubleshooting note should record time, position, sea area, affected systems, screenshots, alarms, weather, network link state, and whether nearby vessels report similar anomalies. That evidence is valuable to the bridge team, the ETO, management, vendors, and insurers.
