Amazon Leo Is Coming to Yachting: How It Compares with Starlink and OneWeb

Amazon is preparing to bring its low-Earth-orbit broadband network, Amazon Leo, into maritime service. For yachts, the most interesting points are its compact terminals, high claimed upload speeds and potential as a third LEO option alongside Starlink and OneWeb. The service is not yet generally available, and maritime pricing has not been published.

Amazon Leo, previously known as Project Kuiper, is Amazon's low-Earth-orbit satellite broadband network. The company is targeting residential, enterprise, government, aviation and maritime customers, with yachting specifically included in its maritime plans. ELCOME and MTN have already been announced as maritime service partners. 1 2

The system is still being deployed. Amazon says initial commercial service will begin during 2026, but as of September there is no confirmed date for general yacht or maritime availability.

What Amazon Leo is

The first-generation constellation is planned at approximately 3,232 satellites, operating between roughly 590 and 630 km above Earth. Amazon reported nearly 400 satellites in orbit during its Q2 2026 results. 3 4

Production satellites use optical inter-satellite links, allowing traffic to move between satellites by laser before returning to the terrestrial network. This is particularly useful over oceans, where a vessel may be far from a ground gateway. 5

For yachts, Amazon is positioning Leo as a managed connectivity service rather than simply a consumer broadband product. Its maritime offering covers commercial shipping, offshore operations, cruise and yachting, while AWS integration and private networking are also part of the wider enterprise proposition. 2 10

Terminals and expected performance

Two terminals are being positioned for maritime use.

The Leo Pro is approximately 28 × 28 cm, weighs about 2.4 kg and is rated for up to 400 Mbps download. The larger Leo Ultra measures about 51 × 76 cm, weighs 19.5 kg and is designed for up to 1 Gbps down and 400 Mbps up. 6

The Ultra's claimed upload performance is especially interesting for yachts using cloud backup, video conferencing, remote support or moving large media files ashore. Amazon does, however, state that these figures are based on preliminary testing and are not guaranteed service speeds. 6

The smaller Pro terminal could also be attractive where topside space is limited or where several antennas are needed to maintain different views of the sky.

There is still an important gap: Amazon has not yet published the same level of maritime installation detail available for established Starlink and OneWeb hardware. Power consumption, environmental ratings, cable limitations, radar separation and final marine installation requirements will need to be known before an ETO can properly specify the system.

Starlink's greatest advantage today is maturity and constellation density. With more satellites already operating, a vessel can often see several spacecraft at once, which helps with capacity and with short-term blockage from masts, radomes and superstructure. 7

OneWeb takes a different approach. Its smaller constellation operates at around 1,200 km and uses near-polar orbital planes. That gives it particularly strong high-latitude coverage, although the greater distance contributes to a longer radio path. 8

Amazon sits between the two in altitude and planned constellation size. On paper, its terminal size and upload capability look competitive, but it does not yet have Starlink's operational density or the years of maritime service history available from Starlink and OneWeb.

What matters when choosing it for a yacht

Satellite count alone should not decide the system.

For a normal Mediterranean, Caribbean or Southeast Asian programme, Amazon Leo could eventually become a strong alternative or additional WAN path. For expedition yachts, the first-generation orbital design deserves more attention. Amazon's original Gen-1 constellation was designed around inclinations of up to about 51.9 degrees, with continuous coverage broadly to around 56° north and south. OneWeb's near-polar constellation is better suited to very high latitudes today. 9 8

Coverage should therefore be checked against the yacht's actual itinerary rather than inferred from a global marketing map.

Amazon may also appeal to larger yachts because of its enterprise model. Direct integration with AWS and private networking could make Leo useful as part of a managed corporate WAN, while ELCOME and MTN are expected to integrate it alongside other satellite and cellular services rather than sell it only as a standalone connection. 2 10

The deciding factors will ultimately be real-world throughput, coverage, installation requirements, country authorisations, service-level agreements and pricing.

When can yachts buy it, and what will it cost?

Amazon began an enterprise preview in November 2025 and says wider service will roll out during 2026. Maritime agreements are already in place, but ELCOME's current material still directs customers towards a waitlist or sales enquiry rather than an open ordering process. 1 11

As of 11 September 2026, there is no confirmed general maritime launch date in the sources reviewed for this article.

Amazon has also not published retail pricing for maritime hardware or airtime. During development it said the standard 400 Mbps terminal was expected to cost less than $400 to manufacture, but this was a manufacturing target, not a retail price and should not be treated as one. 12

Given the ELCOME and MTN model, yacht pricing may ultimately be offered as part of a managed connectivity package rather than through a simple consumer-style subscription. That remains to be confirmed.

What this means for yachts today

Amazon Leo is worth watching, particularly for yachts wanting another independent LEO network, strong upload performance or compact flat-panel hardware.

It is still too early to replace an established Starlink, OneWeb or VSAT service on the expectation that Leo will take over. For a newbuild or major refit, however, allowing suitable antenna positions, cable routes, rack space and WAN capacity for another flat-panel service would make later adoption much easier.

Once commercial maritime packages appear, the most useful comparison will be the provider's confirmed coverage, real throughput, installation requirements, support model and total cost—not the headline satellite count alone.
